Procedures and requirements

Traveling with pets

  • What are the procedures for traveling with a pet?

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cattle for Costa Rica, through SENASA, is the entity responsible for the regulation of exportation and importation for animals in general. To obtain the necessary requirements for the arrival or departure of pets to and from Costa Rica, contact SENASA at their website or by phone (506) 2587-1600 or (506) 2260-8300 or by email info@senasa.go.cr

The logistics, fees and requirements during flight correspond to the airline with which you travel. It generally is in accordance to the airline, depending on the size of the pet, if it can travel in the main cabin or in the baggage compartment.

In the case of importation, the airline will be responsible for the handling of the animal in the airport transporting it from the airplane to the Terminal for delivery. For dispatch it is necessary that the procedure be handled through a Customs Agency, which must complete the required permits.

In the case of exportation, coordinate with the airline the place, date and time in Costa Rica where the animal(s) are to be received, with the required documentation for SENASA and the corresponding authority of the arrival country. The airline will then be responsible for the delivery of the animal in the Terminal to complete the process.
